hi chrisinda , i really enjoyed your writing about serena. you have a brilliant way of seeing beneath her surface and understanding how and why she is shaped the way she is. one of my favorite elaborations that you wrote was “ The coat speaks to the sad pattern of Serena’s life- that change will not come through her own will but through the desire of a man.”
I liked that you picked up on the fact that Serena actually is smart, articulate, interested in things etc, but sadly very few people notice. There's a theme through S5-6 that Serena does share interests with Dan but he hasn't paid attention to that side of her, e.g. we see him pick up a book of feminist essays and assume it's Blair's when it's Serena's. Maybe the writers should have leaned on it a bit more though as you still see people say that Serena cannot connect with Dan like Blair does.
p.s. serena really is “ The Beautiful and Damned” of the show, isn’t she?
all the best, claire
